The short film “Monologue”, directed by Katja Restović, presents a rare cinematic form in which classical music does not accompany the image, but becomes its very foundation and driving force.
The short art film “Monologue” was created as a visual inspiration to the music of composer Miroslav Miletić, performed by violinist Krešimir Marmilić and organist Milan Hibšer. The film is directed and produced by Croatian filmmaker Katja Restović, who explores the relationship between music, imagery, silence, and inner emotional space through a minimalist and contemplative approach.
The project reflects a long-standing artistic collaboration and mutual understanding among the artists involved. Restović and Marmilić have known each other for many years, first meeting during the production of a music video for Dado Topić, where, as the director recalls, they immediately recognized a shared artistic sensibility.
“Krešimir is one of those people who truly love what they do and are deeply devoted to their craft,” Katja Restović points out. “He is especially passionate about classical music, performs extensively, and is also highly engaged in educational programs through schools and cultural institutions.”
For Restović, “Monologue” holds particular significance as it marks her first project fully conceived as an authorial visual response to music and performance.
“I have worked in various formats before, but this is the first piece entirely shaped by this music and by Krešimir’s exceptional abilities as a violinist,” Restović adds. “We have known each other for a long time, and I deeply respect him—not only as a musician, but as a person.”
She emphasizes that the collaboration reaffirmed her belief in simplicity and human connection. “Krešimir has shown me many times that the most valuable things in life are often the simplest ones, and that true beauty lies in the people around you,” says Restović. She concludes that working on the film was both a challenge and a profound pleasure. “This was a slightly different form, and those kinds of challenges always draw me in. They don’t just interest me—they truly fulfill and inspire me,” Restović concludes.
