Factum: the development of independent documentary film

Factum is one of the key independent documentary production organisations in Croatia, active since the late 1990s, with a sustained focus on author-driven documentary film, international collaboration and the development of the film scene. Founded in 1997 as a documentary project of the Centre for Drama Art, Factum emerged at a time when independent documentary production was only beginning to establish its own space and language.

Over the years, Factum has developed a recognisable working model that combines film production, educational processes and public presentation. Its documentaries—often socially engaged and clearly authorial in approach—have been screened at numerous international festivals and form an important part of contemporary Croatian documentary heritage.

A central element of Factum’s activity is ZagrebDox, the international documentary film festival founded in 2005, which has become one of the most significant meeting points for filmmakers, producers and audiences in this part of Europe. Alongside its festival programme, ZagrebDox includes professional platforms dedicated to project development and international exchange, further strengthening the documentary film network.

Today, Factum functions as a stable and relevant production context in which documentary film remains a space for authorial exploration, critical reflection and a responsible engagement with reality.
