Cavaliere Marko Antonio Mattei from The Gates of Redemption — brought to life through the interpretation of Luka Dragić

Luka Dragić is one of Croatia’s most distinguished actors — a National Drama Principal known for his exceptional range, precision, and profound stage intelligence.

Born on 28 June 1979 in Zagreb, he graduated from the Academy of Dramatic Art in 2001. Since 2004, he has been a member of the Croatian National Theatre Zagreb’s Drama Ensemble, where he has taken on numerous complex and demanding roles.

Dragić works across a broad theatrical spectrum, performing both in major institutional theatres and independent productions. He has participated in the Perforacije festival as a performance author, and regularly appears in films and television. As a young actor, he drew attention with his role in Snježana Tribuson’s God Forbid a Worse Thing Should Happen, and later made memorable appearances in The Long Dark Night, The Fourteenth Day, Metastases, and The Constitution.

One of his most acclaimed achievements is his portrayal of Hamlet at the Dubrovnik Summer Festival — the fourteenth actor to take on the role on that legendary Lovrijenac stage, under the direction of Ivica Kunčević. Critics praised him as precise, contemporary, and deeply inspired, with masterful delivery of iconic monologues such as “To be or not to be…” and “When the king dislikes the play”.

Dragić has often spoken of acting as “an obsession and a joy”, something reflected in his repertoire. He is particularly drawn to affirmative plays and American drama focused on the power of the word, thought, and pure acting craft. In interviews, he highlights the importance of the “magic of play”, the intensity of working at the Dubrovnik Summer Festival, and the challenges of film sets — always emphasising the need for continuous artistic growth.

In the Gates of Redemption project, Luka Dragić appears in the trailer as the interpreter of Cavalier Marko Antonio Mattei, a young Venetian nobleman who embodies the decadence and moral ambiguity of the late Republic. Sent reluctantly to “the wilderness of the Istrian province”, Mattei arrives in Tar with his companion Fabio, only to be transformed by an unexpected love for Antonija. Faced with inner conflict and moral questioning, Mattei evolves from a superficial hedonist into a layered, emotionally complex character.

The trailer’s director and author of the novel The Gates of Redemption, Katja Restović, says:

“Luka Dragić interprets Cavalier Marko Antonio Mattei, a character who represents Venetian decadence. Unhappy with the task assigned to him in the remoteness of the Istrian province, he arrives in Tar with his friend Fabio and falls in love with the beautiful Antonija. Through dilemmas and moral questioning, he transforms and matures into a fascinating, deeply layered character. Working with Luka was a true pleasure.”
