When MTV aired its first video, “Video Killed the Radio Star”, on August 1, 1981, a cultural revolution began — one that forever changed music, fashion and visual identity. As the first channel to merge sound and image into a continuous stream of creativity, MTV quickly became a global symbol of youth, style and pop culture.
MTV at Fashion News 1994 – a milestone for Croatian fashion
In 1994, an MTV crew arrived in Opatija to film an exclusive feature on Fashion News, the international festival that boldly connected Croatian fashion with Europe and beyond. They filmed runway shows, interviewed designers and organisers, and captured the energy of an event far ahead of its time.
MTV later aired a special feature on Fashion News across several segments — marking the first time Croatian fashion was showcased on a major global pop-culture platform.
HTV refused to come — then broadcast MTV’s footage
Before MTV’s arrival, Croatian National Television (HTV) in Zagreb refused to send its own crew, claiming the project was too expensive, logistically complicated and “not particularly interesting” for national broadcasting.
However, after MTV filmed and aired its report — and after news of Fashion News began circulating — HTV used portions of MTV’s footage in their prime-time Daily News, presenting them as previews and coverage of the festival.
In a striking twist, an international broadcaster recognized the importance of Fashion News before national media did.
A symbol of an era
MTV’s visit to Opatija in 1994 remains a landmark moment — the point at which Croatian fashion and global media met on a powerful, unexpected level. It proved:
